The Consolata Missionaries from the Mozambique-Angola Region have commenced their Regional Assembly with a spiritual retreat held on June 11th and 12th in Lichinga, northern Mozambique. The gathering was led by Father Inácio Mole, from the diocesan clergy of Lichinga and Parish Priest of the Cathedral, under the theme “Religious life in the context of the Jubilee of Hope.”

The retreat marked the beginning of the Assembly’s work, providing a time of deep listening and spiritual reflection. Father Inácio, who holds a special affection for the Consolata Missionaries—having been educated by them and recognizing the fundamental role they played in the evangelization of the Niassa region—emphasized that “the presence of the Consolata Missionaries in northern Mozambique, now completing one hundred years, is a testament to fidelity and hope.”

Over the two days, the missionaries reflected on four fundamental sub-themes related to consecrated life in the spirit of the Jubilee of Hope:
Fidelity in Christ
It was highlighted that mission arises from the hope we have in Christ. Fidelity to the Lord is the source of meaning for missionary life, even amidst difficulties and tribulations. It is the love of Christ that sustains and brings forth hope.
Synodal Communion as a Path of Hope
It was emphasized that mission can only be fruitful in communion. Division weakens the Church, and missionaries are called to be witnesses of hope, living synodality as a style of life and mission.
Walking Together with the Church in Hope
Religious life needs to be integrated into the concrete reality of our brothers and sisters. The call to conversion is also an appeal to community living and sharing life. Hope is built in community, for we are saved together.
Mission Amidst Challenges and Joys
Evangelization requires going through trials. However, the missionary’s strength is born from the cross and resurrection. The true joy of mission is the result of difficulties overcome with faith. Christian hope is rooted in the certainty that the cross leads to life.

At the end of the retreat, the missionaries expressed gratitude for this time of spiritual renewal, recognizing the importance of keeping the flame of hope alive in the face of current missionary challenges. “Christ is the true missionary of hope. And we, his disciples, are called to continue his mission, being bearers of this hope in the places where we serve,” highlighted the preacher, Fr. Inácio Mole.
With the retreat concluded, the missionaries will continue the work of the Regional Assembly, which will proceed with moments of sharing, evaluation, and planning. The activities will be illuminated by Ongoing Formation, guided by the centenary of the Consolata Missionaries’ presence in Mozambique and the current challenges of the mission.
