A funeral Mass marked by widespread participation and deep emotion was celebrated on Friday, June 12, at the Cathedral of Quelimane, for Mons. Osório Citora Afonso, IMC, Bishop of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, in Mozambique, who was brutally murdered in his episcopal residence on June 6.

The celebration was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Mozambique, Mons. Luís Miguel Muñoz Cárdaba, and concelebrated by the bishops of the Mozambican Episcopal Conference (CEM). Numerous priests, religious, and lay faithful attended to pay their last respects to a man held in high esteem by all and to a pastor regarded as deeply attentive to the spiritual and material needs of the people entrusted to his care. Also present was the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, along with several ministers and other national authorities.

Knowing the Truth
In his homily, the Apostolic Nuncio said that they had killed a man of peace, a missionary who believed in the goodness of people. “We should not be here today; we should not be celebrating this funeral. What happened should never have happened. Never before in the history of Mozambique has a bishop been murdered,” said Nuncio Muñoz Cárdenas, expressing his hope that “all the motives behind this violent death be made known with certainty. However painful they may be, we must not be afraid of the truth. The truth will set us free.”
A Man of Peace

Reflecting on the figure of Mons. Citora Afonso, a Consolata missionary, the Apostolic Nuncio recalled that “they killed a man of peace, they killed a man of reconciliation, a missionary who believed in the goodness of people, a devoted pastor who gave himself completely in service until the very end. We cannot allow this innocent blood to plunge us into pessimism, into disillusionment. No — this is the time for profound conversion, for purifying penance, for interior renewal. May the shed blood of Bishop Osório make us better, take sin away from us, convert us from evil to good, from darkness to light. Then his death will be fruitful; it will purify this diocese and the Church, and make us all better. I am certain that this cruel death will not be in vain. I believe that God, in his holy and mysterious Providence, will manage to transform so much evil into good,” concluded Mons. Muñoz Cárdaba.
Pope Leo: A Generous Pastor
In a message read during the funeral of Mons. Osório Afonso, Pope Leo XIV — who was in Spain on an Apostolic Journey — expressed his dismay at what had occurred and called for the full clarification of the circumstances surrounding this crime. “Having received with profound dismay the news of the violent death of Dom Osório Citora Afonso, IMC, I wish, in this hour of grief, to join all the bishops, his mother and family members, the Consolata Missionaries, the clergy and other faithful of the particular Churches of Quelimane and Beira, assuring them of my thoughts and prayers,” wrote the Pope. He wished to express his sorrow and the closeness of the entire Catholic Church through a message addressed to Mons. Inácio Saúre, Archbishop of Nampula and President of the CEM, in which Mons. Osório Afonso had served as Secretary General.

“While I await the full clarification of the circumstances of this crime,” the Pope wrote, “I implore the comfort of hope and pray that the Lord may receive this generous pastor, and that this moment of grief may be lived in faith, in the light of the Risen Christ, for the benefit of the beloved Mozambican Church, upon which I grant the Apostolic Blessing, so that she may remain steadfast in proclaiming forgiveness and concord.”
At the conclusion of the celebration, several messages of condolence were read, including those from President Daniel Chapo, from the President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, Mons. Inácio Saúre, from the Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries, Father Cassiano Kalima, and from representatives of the Afonso family.

Private Funeral in Nampula
After the funeral Mass, the bishop’s remains were flown to Nampula, more than 500 kilometres from Quelimane, where on this Saturday, June 13, 2026, a funeral Mass was celebrated, presided over by Archbishop Inácio Saúre, IMC, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima — the church where Mons. Osório Citora Afonso had been baptized, confirmed, and ordained a priest. This was followed by the burial rite at the Clergy Cemetery of the Archdiocese of Nampula, at the Mater Apostolorum Propaedeutic Seminary, in the Nampaco district.

Investigation into the Murder
The investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) continues. On June 11, SERNIC announced the arrest of three individuals suspected of involvement in the murder of the bishop, who was killed by a rifle shot to the chest. The SERNIC spokesperson for Zambezia Province, Domingos Barrone, confirmed that the arrests had been validated by the judicial authorities. He did not reveal the names of the three suspects nor give any indication of their possible role in the killing.

According to several Mozambican newspapers, the individuals are people close to Mons. Osório and the episcopal residence — a priest, a security guard, and the gardener. In recent days, some daily newspapers and local sources had anticipated SERNIC’s statements by identifying Father Adelino Novais Amado, of the Diocese of Quelimane, as the instigator of the murder. However, the rapid succession of reports — at times contradictory — calls for caution.https://youtu.be/0i7ms6HUyrI
