St. Joseph Allamano: 3. Holiness and the Spirit of Prayer

Pope Francis used to tell us that “prayer is like the oxygen of life, it serves to attract to us the presence of the Holy Spirit who always pushes us forward” (General Audience, 11 November 2020). Thus, prayer is the privileged means through which we all come into contact with God, allowing us to achieve true familiarity with Him..

St. Joseph Allamano defines prayer as a priority: “Yes, yes, let’s work; but remember that prayer is more necessary than anything else” (VS, 532). “First we must sanctify ourselves, first pray, then do good to others. We must love prayer! Blessed are you if you strive to progress more and more in the interior life, with a spirit of recollection and prayer” (VS, 552).

These quotes are taken from the third meditation on the journey of preparation for the Centenary of the birth into heaven of Saint Giuseppe Allamano (16 February 2026). This journey, throughout the Consolata Family in the world, began with the feast of the Foundation of the two Institutes, celebrated on 29 January 2025.

The first reflection in March invited us to meditate on “Holiness and God Alone.” In April, in the second meditation we reflected on “Holiness and the Eucharistic Dimension of Life.” We are now publishing the third reflection entitled “Holiness and the Spirit of Prayer” to be used as a guide for retreats or other moments of prayer.
