His groundbreaking thesis, titled “Mary’s ‘Crying’ by the Tomb in John 20:11-18 Through Funeral ‘Weeping’ in the Luo Culture,” explored the profound narrative and theological significance of crying within the context of the apparition of Jesus to Mary Magdalene, as depicted in John’s Gospel.

The crux of Fr. Katende’s study delved into the parallels between the emotional outpouring of Mary Magdalene at the tomb of Jesus and the funeral “weeping” rituals in the Kenyan Luo culture. His research analyzed how crying, as portrayed in both biblical and cultural contexts, evolves from an expression of sorrow into one of joy, marking the transition from the grief of loss to the recognition of the risen Christ. Through this lens, Fr. Katende examined the interplay of sorrow and joy as thematic elements that define the spiritual and emotional experience of individuals confronted with death and resurrection, both in the biblical narrative and in Luo funeral traditions.

The public defense, held at CUEA, attracted notable attendees from various circles, including Fr. Zachariah Kariuki, the Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries for the Kenya-Uganda Region. Fr. Jude Katende is not only a distinguished scholar but also the rector of Allamano House, a theological formation house in Nairobi, where he is respected and admired by the young missionaries in formation. A large contingent of these young men, alongside his confreres and friends, were present to show their unwavering support for their rector during this significant occasion.

Fr. Katende’s insightful presentation and defense of his thesis captivated the panel of academic examiners, who were deeply impressed by his meticulous research and theological analysis. His ability to seamlessly integrate cultural anthropology with biblical exegesis showcased a profound understanding of the human and divine dimensions of mourning and joy in both religious and cultural settings.

Following his successful defense, Fr. Katende was warmly congratulated by the panelists, who praised the originality and depth of his research. His dissertation not only contributes to the ongoing scholarly discussion on biblical narratives but also provides valuable insight into how cultural practices, such as those found in the Luo community, can illuminate and enrich theological interpretations of scripture.

The presence of Fr. Zachariah Kariuki underscored the significance of this moment for the Consolata Missionaries, as Fr. Katende’s achievements reflect the missionary congregation’s commitment to intellectual and spiritual formation. The support from his fellow priests, young Consolata missionaries, and friends further highlighted the sense of communal pride and joy that accompanied this academic milestone.

Fr. Jude Katende’s successful defense of his doctoral dissertation marks the culmination of years of rigorous study and reflection, and his work stands as a testament to the importance of cultural and theological dialogue in the Church’s mission of evangelization and understanding. This achievement not only enriches the academic landscape of CUEA but also serves as an inspiration to future theologians and missionaries who seek to bridge faith and culture in meaningful ways.

As he continues his work as rector at Allamano House, Fr. Katende’s scholarly contributions and pastoral leadership will undoubtedly continue to shape and inspire the lives of those under his care, as well as the broader theological community.
