Ethiopian Catholic Church welcomes papal representative

Archbishop Brian Udagwe member of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu in Nigeria, was born in Southwestern part of Cameroon. He was ordained a priest on the 2nd of May 1992. He did his studies at the pontifical college in Rome before joining the diplomatic service of the Holy see in 1994.

The new Nuncio was appointed to be the representative of the Holy See to Ethiopia on 12th of April 2025 by the late his Holiness Pope Francis. He came in to succeed His eminence Archbishop Antoine Camilleri, who had completed his term of service.

Upon his arrival at Addis Ababa International Airport, Archbishop Brian Udagwe was received warmly by His Eminence Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew, Archbishop of Addis Ababa together with other conference of Catholic bishops and priests.

Archbishop Brian Udagwe has been in the diplomatic service of the Holy see for more than three decades. He signs in to the Ethiopian Catholic Church as the 13th Apostolic Nuncio and the very first African. Before his appointment to Ethiopia, he represented the Pope in Sri Lanka as the Nuncio. Other countries he has offered his diplomatic service include; Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Bulgaria, Thailand, England, Benin and Togo.

The Ethiopian Catholic Bishops welcomes Archbishop Brian Udagwe to Ethiopia and wishes him the very best and success in his ministry in this part of the horn of Africa.
