It features a reception area, seven private consultation rooms, a first-aid room, and a specialized resuscitation room for life-threatening crises. For immediate needs, the department houses its own emergency pharmacy. Patients visiting for regular appointments use the Outpatient Department (OPD) clinics, which include a dedicated Care and Treatment Centre (CTC) for HIV care, alongside Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) and “NURU” antenatal care for pregnant mothers.

Surgery and Intensive Care

For advanced medical procedures, the hospital operates a robust surgical theatre service. This department includes six major operating rooms, specialized sterilization rooms to maintain strict hygiene, and an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to closely monitor patients after complex surgeries.

Inpatient Wards

Patients who need to stay overnight are admitted to one of eleven specialized wards, which accommodate up to 404 beds. These include separate general Male and Female Wards, an Annex/Isolation Ward for contagious illnesses, and a Paediatric Ward for children. Specialized care is provided in the Maternity and Premature Unit, the Orthopaedic Ward for bone injuries, the Urology Ward for urinary conditions, a Private Ward, and dedicated Surgical Wards for both men and women.

Diagnostics and Rehabilitation

To find and treat illnesses accurately, the hospital uses modern diagnostic tools, including CT scans, MRI machines, ultrasounds, and endoscopy procedures. These work alongside the main laboratory services, a dental unit, and heart screening tools like ECG and Echocardiogram units. Finally, the hospital helps patients recover through its physiotherapy services and a unique prosthesis workshop that designs and builds artificial legs and arms for amputated patients.

Surgery is one the services offered by the hospital.

To remain fully operational and self-sufficient, the hospital relies on a network of internal supporting services that keep its medical facilities running smoothly at all times.

Water and Heating Supply

Clean water is sourced directly from nature, as the hospital owns four registered natural springs located in the surrounding mountains. This ensures a constant supply of safe, potable water for the entire facility. To manage hygiene and comfort, the hospital utilizes two central wood heaters. These heavy-duty systems distribute continuous hot water across all medical blocks and power the intensive needs of the central laundry department.

Consolata Hospital Ikonda.

Power and Energy Security

Energy reliability is vital for patient safety, so the hospital secures its electricity through a triple-source backup system. It connects directly to the national grid (Tanesco), operates its own independent hydropower station, and maintains a powerful diesel generator. This multi-layered setup guarantees that critical medical equipment never loses power, even during unexpected regional blackouts.

Medical Infrastructure and Waste

Life-saving respiratory support is managed entirely on-site by a dedicated medical oxygen plant. Equipped with three industrial oxygen generators, the plant produces up to 16.5 cubic meters of medical-grade oxygen every hour to supply the wards and operating theatres. Finally, the hospital maintains strict environmental and safety standards through an on-site waste management incinerator, which safely destroys hazardous medical waste and prevents contamination

The presence of the Medical volunteers

With a total of 430 staff members, we still receive specialized medical personnel coming from Europe ( more than 100 volunteers per year) . We register them at Medical Council of Tanganyika. Their presence is very important both for the patients and for the training of the local medical staff.

We need your support

The hospital runs under the help of many benefactors and people of good will given that the ‘contribution’ that the patients give cannot run an institution of such immensity. We continue inviting people of good will, even among our lay missionaries to support us in one way or another. This can be done through financial contribution or direct intervention which involves coming to have a direct experience with the hospital and patients and in this way, to know the daily needs that this institution registers.

Some of the volunteers at Consolata Hospital Ikonda.

Conclusively, Consolata Hospital Ikonda stands as a vital pillar of healthcare excellence and community transformation within the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. The institution has successfully evolved into a highly respected Regional Referral Hospital, demonstrating how targeted charitable medical missions can catalyze broad socio-economic growth for an entire region. This is in response to God’s words through the prophet Isaiah: ‘console, console my people’ (40,1). And this is the mission and vision of Saint Joseph Allamano.

*Fr.
