Os\u00f3rio Citora Afonso, IMC, Bishop of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, in Mozambique, who <a href=\"https:\/\/consolataafrica.org\/en\/bishop-osorioafonso-of-quelimane-mozambique-dies-suddenly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was brutally murdered<\/a> in his episcopal residence on June 6.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By Jaime C. Patias *<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The celebration was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Mozambique, Mons. Lu\u00eds Miguel Mu\u00f1oz C\u00e1rdaba, and concelebrated by the bishops of the Mozambican Episcopal Conference (CEM). Numerous priests, religious, and lay faithful attended to pay their last respects to a man held in high esteem by all and to a pastor regarded as deeply attentive to the spiritual and material needs of the people entrusted to his care. What happened should never have happened. Never before in the history of Mozambique has a bishop been murdered,&#8221; said Nuncio Mu\u00f1oz C\u00e1rdenas, expressing his hope that &#8220;all the motives behind this violent death be made known with certainty. However painful they may be, we must not be afraid of the truth. The truth will set us free.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Funerali di mons. Citora Afonso, a Consolata missionary, the Apostolic Nuncio recalled that &#8220;they killed a man of peace, they killed a man of reconciliation, a missionary who believed in the goodness of people, a devoted pastor who gave himself completely in service until the very end. We cannot allow this innocent blood to plunge us into pessimism, into disillusionment. No \u2014 this is the time for profound conversion, for purifying penance, for interior renewal. May the shed blood of Bishop Os\u00f3rio make us better, take sin away from us, convert us from evil to good, from darkness to light. Then his death will be fruitful; it will purify this diocese and the Church, and make us all better. I am certain that this cruel death will not be in vain. I believe that God, in his holy and mysterious Providence, will manage to transform so much evil into good,&#8221; concluded Mons. Mu\u00f1oz C\u00e1rdaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo: A Generous Pastor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a message read during the funeral of Mons. Os\u00f3rio Afonso, Pope Leo XIV \u2014 who was in Spain on an Apostolic Journey \u2014 expressed his dismay at what had occurred and called for the full clarification of the circumstances surrounding this crime. &#8220;Having received with profound dismay the news of the violent death of Dom Os\u00f3rio Citora Afonso, IMC, I wish, in this hour of grief, to join all the bishops, his mother and family members, the Consolata Missionaries, the clergy and other faithful of the particular Churches of Quelimane and Beira, assuring them of my thoughts and prayers,&#8221; wrote the Pope. He wished to express his sorrow and the closeness of the entire Catholic Church through a message addressed to Mons. In\u00e1cio Sa\u00fare, Archbishop of Nampula and President of the CEM, in which Mons. Os\u00f3rio Citora Afonso had been baptized, confirmed, and ordained a priest. Photo: Archdiocese of Nampula<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Investigation into the Murder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) continues. On June 11, SERNIC announced the arrest of three individuals suspected of involvement in the murder of the bishop, who was killed by a rifle shot to the chest. The SERNIC spokesperson for Zambezia Province, Domingos Barrone, confirmed that the arrests had been validated by the judicial authorities. Os\u00f3rio and the episcopal residence \u2014 a priest, a security guard, and the gardener. In recent days, some daily newspapers and local sources had anticipated SERNIC&#8217;s statements by identifying Father Adelino Novais Amado, of the Diocese of Quelimane, as the instigator of the murder.
