Photos: SACC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The president of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC) says the recently concluded solidarity visit to Mozambique emphasised the church\u2019s call for dialogue in the Southern African nation<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>By Sheila Pires *<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the two-day visit, Bishop Sithembele Anton Sipuka said that during the meeting with the Catholic Bishops of Mozambique at the close of their plenary session, the Bishops expressed deep concerns about the recent election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mozambican Bishops urge peaceful ways of dissent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Bishop Sipuka, the Mozambican Bishops were concerned about reports of electoral irregularities and the alleged excessive use of force by police. However, they also urged citizens to avoid violent responses and to seek peaceful ways of expressing their dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the solidarity visit the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC) together with representatives of the South African Council of Churches (SACC), met with the Mozambican Catholic Bishops, Christian Council of Mozambique and other religious leaders, who shared the urgency of increasing the Churches&#8217; involvement in advocating for peaceful dialogue amid escalating tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Dialogue as way forward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/consolataafrica.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.1500.8445-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consolataafrica.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.1500.8445-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/consolataafrica.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.1500.8445-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/consolataafrica.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.1500.8445-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/consolataafrica.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.1500.8445.jpeg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The SACBC\/SACC Solidarity visit to Mozambique<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Bishop Sipuka, the meetings with the Deputy Minister of Justice and representatives of the South African Embassy in Mozambique, highlighted the \u201cseriousness\u201d of the situation and stressed the need for \u201cdialogue as the most viable way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although time constraints prevented the delegation from meeting with Mozambican \u201cpolitical parties, and civil society groups,\u201d Bishop Sipuka believes that the visit \u201cheightened the sense of urgency\u201d around the need for talks among stakeholders, including efforts by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to address the political tensions in Mozambique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>National Day of Prayer for Peace \u2013 24 November<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the November plenary session held in Matola, the Mozambican Bishops announced a National Day of Prayer for Peace set for November 24, on the feast day of Christ the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the SACBC and SACC plan to stay \u201cconnected with the Mozambican church to provide continued support and determine any further steps that may be required to assist in promoting peace in Mozambique,\u201d said Bishop Sipuka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement shared with the SACBC Communication office, the SACC has called on the South African government \u201cto use all of its influence to encourage all political formations in Mozambique to come together for the sake of the future of the country, and put aside their narrow political party interests, in service to the people of Mozambique.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"fonte\"><em>* Sheila Pires \u2013 Pretoria &#8211;
